Description
An imposing depiction of a Matador (bullfighter) with a powerful stance, this broad figure has a stern facial expression showing his anticipation and suspense. The artist has skillfully captured this final tense moment just before the fight. Manuel Martinez Hugu, more widely known as ‘Manolo’, was a highly celebrated Catalan sculptor. A close friend of Pablo Picasso, the artist was born in Barcelona in 1872 and spent some time living in Paris, where he developed his outstanding style which has echoes of the French master Aristide Maillol (1861-1944). Manolo is widely known for his magnificent sculptures, but this skilled artist also created a wonderful collection of paintings, drawings and prints.
