Heinrich Richter-Berlin studied at the Berlin University of the Arts in 1902/1903. He was excluded from further studies because he had exhibited in the Berlin Secession without permission. Around 1907/1908 he studied at the Lothar von Kunowski art school in Berlin. After Kunowski left Berlin in 1909 to teach at the Dsseldorf School of Applied Arts, Richter founded a painting school at the same address and taught the L. v. system there. Kunowski. In 1910, Heinrich Richter was a co-founder of the Neue Secession, an artist group that split off from the Berlin Secession and existed until 1914. In 1918 he became a co-founder of the November Group alongside the painters Max Pechstein, Georg Tappert, Csar Klein and Moriz Melzer, who like him had been members of the New Secession. He designed numerous woodcuts for the expressionist magazine Der Sturm and took part in Franz Pfemfert’s Die Aktion. from 1916 to 1945, Richter intensively designed buildings for film productions; In some cases he oversaw up to 26 films per year. For Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau he designed the films The Walk into the Night and The Janus Head, both from 1920. He also worked with film directors Hermann Kosterlitz, Alexander Korda, Erich Engel, Fedor Ozep, Kurt Bernhardt, Richard Oswald and Michael Kertesz, among others. He designed stage sets for the actress Rosa Valetti. Between 1933 and 1939 he primarily designed the sets for short films, including the majority of works by Piel Jutzi and Jrgen von Alten.
In 1937, in the Nazi campaign Degenerate Art, oil paintings Boats on the Beach (1911) and House and Tree were confiscated from the collection of the Jena Art Association Richter-Berlin and then destroyed.
