Johann Weinmann (1683-1741), German botanist, pharmacist and apothecary, was the author and publisher of “Phytanthoza Iconographia”, one of the most important botanical works of the 18th century. Published in eight volumes between 1737 and 1745, it contains 1,025 color engravings representing thousands of different plants. Many of the illustrations were created by the young artist George Ehret, who used a new printing process, mezzo-tint, to achieve greater detail and shading than with established line engraving techniques.
