The Ottoman Empire was named for Osman Gazi the Turkish form of the Arabic name Uthmn, a Muslim prince in Bithynia who conquered neighbouring and founded his own ruling line c. 1300.

In 1453, the city of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), the capital of the Byzantine empire, was captured by the Ottoman sultan Mehmet II.
Constantinople remained the Ottoman capital until 1923.

Ottoman cultural, political, and economic power reached its zenith during the 16th century. It took control of parts of Persia, most of Arabia, and large sections of Hungary and the Balkans. By the early 16th century the Ottomans had also defeated the Mamlk dynasty in Syria and Egypt; and their navy under Barbarossa soon seized control of much of the Barbary Coast.

By the eighteenth century the vast Ottoman empire started to decline. By the nineteenth century, many of its territories in North Africa, Europe, and West Asia were lost.
The Ottoman period spanned more than 600 years and came to an end only in 1922.
In 1923 the Ottoman state was replaced by the modern Turkish Republic, established by Mustafa Kemal Atatrk who serves as its first president
