Description
Pierre Bonnard – The Street – Original Lithograph Dimensions : 13 x 10”. Paper : Rives vellum. Edition : 225 copies. 1927 From Tableaux de Paris, Emile-Paul Freres, Paris CHARLES MARTIN (French / 1884-1934) Charles Martin was born in Montpellier, and studied art in Montpellier and at the Acadmie Julian and the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Fernand Cormon. Charles Martin was an important figure in Art Deco, as illustrator, poster-designer, fashion, ballet, and theatre designer, as well as contributor to fashion journals such as the Gazette du Bon Ton and the Journal des Dames et des Modes. Charles Martin studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier and subsequently at the Beaux-Arts, Paris. Among our prints by Charles Martin is one of 50 suites of his pochoir illustrations for the bawdy Contes et Nouvelles of La Fontaine. Supplementary to these is a portfolio of 15 much more explicit etchings by Charles Martin, relating to the same subjects, These etchings are in two states: pure etchings on Japan, and etchings with aquatint, and the title etched into the plate. These erotic etchings by Charles Martin are so scarce that we have been unable to find any other record of their existence.
