Description
This work, “Bulls and Bullfighters,” created by Pablo Picasso in 1961 and reproduced in offset in 1996 by Nouvelles Images in France, captures the artist’s intense fascination with bullfighting, a recurring theme throughout his career. The offset print, made on 250 g/m Arches Veln paper with five direct tones, is a high-quality reproduction of the original work.
The scene shows a dynamic and expressive depiction of a bullfighter on horseback and a bull, done in Picasso’s characteristic loose, gestural style. The black strokes, strong and fluid, evoke the energy and tension of the sand, while the colors, applied selectively (blue, brown and ocher), accentuate the composition. The signature of Luis Miguel Domingun, famous bullfighter and close friend of Picasso, appears at the bottom of the work, which adds symbolic and personal value to the set.
The work is inspired by the book “Toros y Toreros”, a collaboration between Picasso and Domingun, in which Picasso not only illustrates bullfighting, but also expresses the emotional and artistic connection he had with this spectacle. The book’s illustrations were made between 1957 and 1959, and later compiled in 1961. This print is part of the 3rd edition and is an outstanding example of how Picasso fused art with his passion for Spanish culture.
This engraving, produced in a limited edition in 1996, is an ideal piece for collectors who appreciate Picasso’s work and his connection with the bullfighting world.
